Round 2 - Trial Project

💡 Goal - The final step of the process. The goal here is to give your top 2-4 candidates access to the tools you expect them to use and a paid trial project. Then review projects and make your final decision!

Half-onboarding:

💡 Invite candidate to private slack group with 2 team members. Good way for candidate to see how you communicate.

Give limited access to the tools you expect them to use. Slack, Github, etc.

We create a private slack channel and invite the candidate as a guest. We also have a minimum of 2 team members join the slack group. We have found in the past it’s better to have more than one team member to help evaluate communication especially in the early days.

See below and example of a test project conversation -

Share the test project:

💡 Send the test project in the slack group to each candidate. Along with any instructions or loom videos.

See this post on creating the test project Create a trial project: Pull an ACTUAL project from your roadmap.

Evaluate test projects:

💡 Assess the completed projects and review any accompanying Loom videos or explanations.

For the React Expert we reviewed the following;

  • Code Quality
  • Design implementation
  • Created reusable components
  • Added a loading state
  • Added test cases

We had 2 candidates complete the test project and Tyler, our head developer, reviewed both projects and shared his feedback with Duncan.

Make a decision: Choose the candidate who performed best in the test project and has the most relevant experience.

💡 Final decision time!

Both candidates test projects were pretty similar levels, to make the finial decision we reviewed the following -

  • Code Quality
  • Design implementation
  • Created reusable components
  • Added a loading state
  • Added test cases
  • Communication
  • Timezone
  • Availability
  • Previous work

We then let the 2 candidates know our final decision🎉
